Assignment #6 - Critiquing a Media Critic

One of my new and most intense interest is in the how to and style genre of YouTube videos. I am so into how beauty gurus and lifestyle vloggers maneuver not only in real life but on their social media platforms, and their careers in general. A popular website for me is xoJane. xoJane is a subsidiary of Time Inc. and is derived from the partnership of the Time Inc. Style Collection and the Time Inc. Lifestyle Network.

An excerpt from the about page on the xoJane website states: "We are not snarky. We are inclusive and encouraging. Like Sassy and Jane before it, xoJane.com is written and created by an entirely devoted community of women (and some token males) who have strong ideas, identities and opinions, who are living what they are writing about. This is a non-judgmental platform where honesty trumps all. This is a place where the comments are as valuable as the posts, where the commenters often become writers on the site and vice versa — the amount and depth of the interaction between writers and readers on xoJane.com is unprecedented and the lines between them are intentionally blurred. xoJane.com is not about changing yourself to fit any mold of what others think you should be, or even what you think you should be. It is about celebrating who you are."

xoJane's article "Why I Don’t Trust YouTube Beauty Gurus Like Zoella and Bethany Mota" is a perfect critique of where the YouTube beauty industry has gone wrong and exploited the gurus just as much as their audience. The article explained the scenario of a young teenage girl going into the makeup aisle and looking for a specific shade just because their favorite guru talked about it in a video. The article explicated how the gurus take monetary sponsor ships to push certain products or certain brands so you never know if a beauty guru genuinely recommends something or she's secretly getting paid for the sponsorship.

This critique by xoJane is completely true and it is a subject that has been hushed over the hype of famous, overpaid beauty bloggers.
